Way back in 1985 when I was working as an employee of a registered investment advisor, one of my associates proposed the idea of our becoming Certified Financial Planners. I had absolutely no idea what that meant. A relatively unknown organization in Colorado was pursuing the daunting goal of making a profession out of financial planning. After mulling this idea over for several months, we finally decided to pay our tuition and registered for a self-study course from the College for Financial Planning. For the next two years, I studied an average of two hours per day and passed each of the six examinations one-by-one. Finally, in March of 1988, I earned my certification.
